WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In anticipation of the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 10, the Florida Marlins filled up their 40-man roster on Friday by adding former Boilermaker right-hander Jay Buente.
Friday was the deadline to protect players from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft by selecting their contracts. The move ensures that Buente will not run the risk of being picked up by another team unless he is outrighted at a later date.
Buente, who was a 14th-round draft pick by the Marlins in 2006, went 10-8 as a Boilermaker in 59 career appearances. The right-hander finished his Purdue career with a 4.81 ERA and 152 strikeouts in 179 1/3 innings pitched.
