Sept. 5 Update: Kevin Plawecki's Brooklyn Cyclones clinched the wild card in the New York-Penn League and will take on the Hudson Valley Renegades in the opening round of the four-team playoffs.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Three Purdue baseball alumni are members of Minor League Baseball teams that qualified for the playoffs in their respective leagues, beginning the postseason this week (Sept. 5-9).

Dan Black, Andy Loomis and Nick Wittgren helped their Minor League teams earn playoff berths. Their series begin Wednesday (Sept. 5). Meanwhile, Kevin Plawecki's Brooklyn Cyclones are one of three teams in the New York-Penn League fighting for two playoff berths. Brooklyn has a one-game lead in the wild card standings with two regular-season games to play. The Cyclones (45-29) are trying outlast Batavia (44-30), which is also only one game behind Auburn (45-29) in the Pickney Division standings. Plawecki and the Cyclones have two home games remaining on their schedule.

Black's Winston-Salem Dash team won both the first- and second-half titles in the South Division of the Carolina League (High A). As a two-time division champ this summer, Winston-Salem gets to play all three games of its division series at home. The Dash finished the regular season with an 87-51 record (.630), among the best in all of Minor League Baseball this summer.

Loomis' Bowie Baysox (78-64) team won the wild card spot in the Western Division of the Eastern League (Double-A). They finished four games behind Akron in the division standings and now take on the Cleveland Indians affiliate in a best-of-five division series. Loomis played for three teams in the Baltimore Orioles farm system this summer, finishing the season at the Double-A level.

Wittgren joined the Greensboro Grasshoppers (80-59) in mid-August after being drafted in June and pitching in the New York-Penn League for the first two months of his professional career. Greensboro qualified for the South Atlantic League playoffs by winning the first-half title in the Northern Division. The Grasshoppers finished three games behind first-round playoff opponent Hagerstown in the overall standings, but has home-field advantage in the best-of-three division series.

As the potential wild card in the New York-Penn League, Plawecki's Brooklyn team would play the division winner with the best overall record. That race is also coming down to the wire. Hudson Valley leads Tri-City by one game with two to play. Hudson Valley and Brooklyn are both members of the McNamara Division.
