WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Returning Boilermakers Kevin Plawecki and Nick Wittgren have led their team into first place in the Cape Cod League and alumni Matt Bischoff and Andy Loomis are now pitching for new Minor League teams, highlighting summer update No. 2 for Purdue baseball.

Plawecki and Wittgren are teammates this summer for the Hyannis (Mass.) Harbor Hawks in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Despite getting rained out six times already, they have helped Hyannis jump out to a 9-2 start. The Harbor Hawks have the best record in the league and own an eight-point lead in the Western Division. The Cape League uses a point system similar to the National Hockey League to determine its standings.

Plawecki has started 10 of the first 11 games, seeing action at catcher and designated hitter. He's batting .241 (7-for-29) with two RBIs and five walks, striking out only twice and reaching base safely in every game he has played. Wittgren has only pitched in three games but has managed to record two wins and a save in his three relief appearances. He has struck out 10 batters in 5 1/3 innings pitch, fanning 10 of the 24 batters he has faced.

In Minor League Baseball, Bischoff (2007-10) is now pitching for the Everett (Wash.) AquaSox, the Seattle Mariners' affiliate in the Northwest League. The 2010 grad has posted a win and two saves in his first three relief appearances for Everett. He has yet to give up an earned run or issue a walk. Bischoff was sidelined by injury for about a month before heading west to join his new team.

Loomis (2007-08), meanwhile, was traded from the Florida Marlins organization to the Philadelphia Phillies farm system. The lefty has joined the Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League.

Many other Minor Leagues begin the second halves of their seasons Thursday. Dan Black (Kannapolis Intimidators), Jordan Comadena (Lancaster JetHawks), Brandon Haveman (Jackson Generals), Mitch Hilligoss (Myrtle Beach Pelicans) and Josh Lindblom (Chattanooga Lookouts) remain active members of rosters. Lindblom (2007-08) returned to Chattanooga after pitching for three weeks with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He surrendered two runs in 10 2/3 innings over eight relief appearances for the Dodgers in his first opportunity at the Major League level.

Meanwhile back on the collegiate summer circuit, Cameron Perkins, Jack DeAno and Pat Gannon are teammates for the Waterloo (Iowa) Bucks of the Northwoods League. Perkins put together a 14-game hitting streak from June 4-17 and has enjoyed back-to-back big games this week. He's 5-for-8 with three RBIs and four runs scored in the last two games, connecting for his first home run of the summer as part of a three-hit effort in the June 22 win against Madison. He was named Northwoods League hitter of the night. For the summer, Perkins is batting .314 (27-for-86) with eight extra-base hits and 10 RBIs.

DeAno and Gannon recently made their summer league debuts with Waterloo. DeAno has reached base safely in six of his eight plate appearances, scoring three times. Gannon has pitched in relief in three games, all Waterloo wins. The Bucks have won seven of their last 10 games and are one of five teams within two games of first place in a hotly-contest South Division race in the Northwoods League.

Elsewhere, Jake Hansen has been productive at the plate while seeing more playing time over the last week for the Richmond (Ind.) RiverRats of the Prospect League, where he is a teammate of Kyle Bischoff. Hansen is 7-for-18 in his last four games, going 2-for-4 with a three-run double in the June 22 comeback win at Quincy. He has reached base safely in all six games he has played for Richmond, batting .320 (8-for-25).
