WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Right-handed pitcher Jay Buente became the third Purdue Boilermaker selected in the 2006 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Buente was selected in the 14th round by the Florida Marlins.
Buente was a career relief pitcher until the 2006 season, when the senior right-hander took over as the No. 1 starter in the Boilermaker rotation.
In 2006, Buente posted a record of 6-4 with an earned-run average of 3.40, third-best on the squad (minimum of 1 IP per team game). In 76.2 innings on the hill as a senior, Buente struck out 70 batters.
Buente began the 2006 season with three wins in his first four starts, and the Boilermakers won all four starts. Buente picked up a 7-0 win over Missouri in a head-to-head match-up with Max Scherzer, the No. 11 draft pick in this year's draft.
Buente is the first Boilermaker selected by the Marlins since the team's inception in 1993.
