Florida State League All-Stars
| Plawecki Named SAL All-Star
Boilers in the Minor Leagues | Vote for Linblom for Triple-A All-Star Game
JUPITER, Fla. -- Purdue baseball will be represented by alumni in both dugouts of the Florida State League All-Star Game later this month after Cameron Perkins and Nick Wittgren were selected for the North and South Division teams, respectively.
Perkins (2010-12) was one of seven players from the Clearwater Threshers (Philadelphia Phillies) selected for the North Division team. Wittgren (2010-12) was one of five players from the Jupiter Hammerheads (Miami Marlins) selected for the South Division team. The Jupiter coaching staff will also serve as the South Division coaches.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely Perkins will face off against Wittgren in the Saturday, June 15 FSL All-Star Game in Dunedin, Fla. Perkins suffered a broken arm when he was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning of Clearwater's May 31 win at Dunedin.
A year ago at this time, Perkins and Wittgren joined former teammate Kevin Plawecki (2010-12) as Boilers selected in the first 10 rounds of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft after helping lead Purdue to the Big Ten title and NCAA Regional hosting assignment. Plawecki was named an All-Star in the Class A South Atlantic League Monday as well. The Florida State League is Class A Advanced (High A).
While seeing action primarily as a corner outfielder this spring, Perkins leads the FSL with a .337 batting average and 67 hits as of June 4. He has also recorded 18 doubles and 31 RBI in 51 games. Clearwater is currently on an eight-game win streak, surging into second place in the six-team North Division of the Florida State League.
Wittgren has been one of the top closers in the FSL. As of June 4, he has a win and a league-leading 12 saves in his 23 appearances, finishing 16 games. The right-hander has surrendered only 20 hits and six walks in 28 1/3 innings pitched for an impressive WHIP of 0.92 to go along with 34 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.95. Jupiter enjoyed a hot stretch in which it compiled a 22-7 record, making up for a 6-16 start. Wittgren had a win and eight saves during the 22-7 stretch. The Hammerheads are in third place in the six-team South Division of the FSL with a 29-28 record.
Wittgren was also named an All-Star in the New York-Penn League last season while pitching for the Jamestown Jammers. He was promoted to Class A Greensboro not long after.
Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin will serve as the site of the 2013 Florida State League All-Star Game. Perkins and Wittgren both played at that field as Boilers in the 2011 season opener, a 10-2 win against Connecticut. Wittgren made his Purdue debut that night. The 2013 Boilermakers also opened their season with a win against UConn in Dunedin.
Fellow alumni Josh Lindblom (2007-08) and Dan Black (2007-09) are also enjoying strong minor league seasons and are candidates to be selected as all-stars as well. Lindblom is 6-0 with a 2.04 ERA and a .184 batting average against for the Round Rock Express (Texas Rangers) in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. Fans can vote for players for the Triple-A All-Star Game, which is set for Wednesday, July 17, in Reno, Nev. Black is batting .296 with 15 extra-base hits, 40 RBI and 39 walks for the Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox) in the Double-A Southern League. The Southern League All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, July 16, in Jacksonville, Fla.
