WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue baseball's Cameron Perkins was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round, 218th overall, in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Tuesday, giving the Boilermakers the first two Big Ten players picked this year.

Kevin Plawecki was selected 35th overall in Compensation Round A by the New York Mets Monday evening. This marks the first time since 1984 that Purdue has had two players selected in the first 218 picks of the same draft. Matt Kinzer (35th) and P.J. Dietrick (142nd) went in the second and sixth rounds that year.

As a junior, Perkins would have the option of returning for his senior season at Purdue. However, players drafted as juniors generally have more leverage in the signing process and prospects selected in the Top 10 rounds usually sign. If so, Perkins would begin his professional career this summer.

Plawecki indicated Tuesday morning he planned to sign with the Mets.

Perkins led the Big Ten with 61 RBI this spring. He also led the Boilers with nine home runs, increasing his career total to 25. As the only position player (third base) named a unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selection this season, Perkins led Purdue with 86 hits. He was also named Third Team All-Big Ten in 2011 and a Freshman All-American in 2010. He could see action as a corner infielder or corner outfielder at the next level.

Besides Plawecki, Perkins is the Boilers' earliest draftee among position players since Ryne White was selected 138th overall in the fourth round of the 2006 Draft.

This marks the second time that Perkins has been drafted. After his senior season of high school, he was selected in the 43rd round of the 2009 Draft by the Seattle Mariners.

Day two of the MLB Draft features rounds 2-15 and the draft concludes Wednesday at noon ET with rounds 16-40. Nick Wittgren is also likely to be selected either today or Wednesday.
