SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Purdue baseball alumnus Kevin Plawecki will represent the Savannah Sand Gnats on the Southern Division team of the South Atlantic League All-Star Game later this month.
As of June 3, Savannah is in a virtual tie for first place in the seven-team Southern Division of the South Atlantic League (Class A) with a 34-22 record. The Sand Gnats were rewarded for their strong start to the season with five players selected to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. Savannah manager Luis Rojas and pitching coach Frank Viola were also picked as part of the Southern Division coaching staff.
Plawecki (2010-12) has been one of the top players in the South Atlantic League in the first two months of the minor league season. As of June 3, he's batting .343 with 22 doubles, six home runs and 39 RBI. He leads the league in doubles, ranks third in batting average and seventh in RBI. A year ago at this time, Plawecki was getting ready for the MLB First-Year Player Draft after being named the Big Ten Player of the Year and Purdue Male Athlete of the Year. He was selected 35th overall in Compensation Round A by the New York Mets, Purdue's third-highest draftee in program history.
The South Atlantic League All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, June 18 at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J. The Lakewood BlueClaws are serving as the host this year. A celebrity hitting contest featuring various professional athletes and celebs as well as SAL All-Stars is set for June 17. Plawecki could be asked to take part in the event.
Plawecki's teammates on Purdue's 2012 Big Ten championship team and fellow MLB draftees last June, Cameron Perkins (2010-12) and Nick Wittgren (2011-12), are expected to be named all-stars in the Florida State League (High A) in the coming days. The Florida State League All-Star game is set for Saturday, June 15, in Dunedin, Fla., at the same field where the Boilermakers opened their 2011 and 2013 seasons. As of June 3, Perkins is batting .337 with 18 doubles and 31 RBI for the Clearwater Threshers (Philadelphia Phillies). Wittgren has a win, 12 saves, 32 strikeouts and a 0.66 ERA as the closer for the Jupiter Hammerheads (Miami Marlins).
Josh Lindblom (2007-08) and Dan Black (2007-09) are also enjoying strong minor league seasons and are candidates to be selected as all-stars as well. Lindblom is 6-0 with a 2.04 ERA and a .184 batting average against for the Round Rock Express (Texas Rangers) in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. Fans can vote for players for the Triple-A All-Star Game, which is set for Wednesday, July 17, in Reno, Nev. Black is batting .301 with 15 extra-base hits, 40 RBI and 38 walks for the Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox) in the Double-A Southern League. The Southern League All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, July 16, in Jacksonville, Fla.
