WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue baseball's Kevin Plawecki was selected 35th overall by the New York Mets in Compensation Round A of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Monday, becoming the first Big Ten player picked this year.

Plawecki's draft spot makes him the third highest selected player in program history. Sherard Clinkscales (31st in 1992) and Jermaine Allensworth (34th in 1993) were picked just a few spots earlier. Plawecki is also the highest Boilermaker drafted since pitcher Chadd Blasko went 36th overall in 2002.

As a junior, Plawecki would have the option of returning for his senior season at Purdue. But he is expected to sign with the Mets and begin his professional career this summer.

Earlier today Plawecki was named one of three finalists nationally for Johnny Bench Award. Florida's Mike Zunino, another Bench Award finalist, was picked third overall Monday evening.

Plawecki was also named the Big Ten Player of the Year and Tournament Most Outstanding Player this season, becoming the fifth player since 1981 to sweep the honors in the same season. He's currently a semifinalist for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy.

Plawecki is the earliest Big Ten player selected since Ohio State pitcher Alex Wimmers went 21st overall and Minnesota catcher Mike Kvasnicka 33rd overall in 2010.

Round one and compensation round A of the 2012 MLB Draft were held tonight. Rounds 2-15 are Tuesday and rounds 16-40 are Wednesday, starting at noon ET. Cameron Perkins and Nick Wittgren are also likely to be selected this week.
