ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The 2008 Big Ten Conference Baseball Tournament opened play on Wednesday, but for the Purdue Boilermakers the day was spent taking in some action at the ballpark as spectators and waiting to see who the team's first opponent would be.

The answer came at 5:52 p.m. when the Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the Indiana Hoosiers 6-1 in a first round contest.

The Lions' win finished setting up Thursday's schedule of action at Ray Fisher Stadium, part of the Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Fifth-seed Ohio State takes on sixth-seed Indiana at noon on Thursday in an elimination game to open the day's schedule. At 3:30 p.m. the second-seed Purdue Nine begins its play in the tournament against third-seed Penn State. The nightcap features top-seed Michigan against fourth-seed Illinois at 7 p.m.

The Boilermakers and Nittany Lions matched up for a four-game Big Ten series in April at Lambert Field with Purdue winning three of the four contests.

Purdue won the opening game of the series against Penn State 13-8 behind an eight-run eighth inning, and then swept the Saturday doubleheader by scores of 12-4 and 4-1. PSU claimed the series finale 13-3 to prevent the Purdue sweep.

Thursday's first pitch for Purdue is scheduled for 3:35 p.m. and the game will be carried on WSHY 1410 AM in the Lafayette area and on the net at PurdueSports.com -- a broadcast tandem which will carry all postseason action for the Boilermakers.
