WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Purdue had six Boilermakers named to the 2008 All-Big Ten Conference squad, with two named to each of the first, second and third teams. Ben Wolgamot and Matt Bischoff were honored on the conference's first team; Brandon Haveman and Josh Lindblom were named to the league's second team; and Ryne White and Matt Jansen were voted to the third team.
The Boilermakers' have had six or more players named All-Big Ten in four previous seasons. Six Boilermakers were tabbed to the 1993, 2001 and 2006 all-conference teams, and a program-record eight were selected following the 1997 regular season.
White, a junior, is the only the third Boilermaker - and first since Shortstop/Designated Hitter Daryl Hallada - to be voted three times to an all-conference team. Additionally, White and right-handed pitcher Mike Hedman share the distinction of being the only Boilermakers to be named all-conference three-straight years.
Hedman accomplished this feat following the 1997 season after receiving his only first-team citation. He was a third-team designee in 1995 and a second-team pick in 1996.
Hallada was named All-Big Ten in 1997, 1998 and 2000.
White, a native of Chicago, earned second team all-league honors in the outfield in 2006 and was the consensus first team first baseman last season. White was second in the league among first basemen with nine home runs in Big Ten - setting a Purdue conference season record - and led all Big Ten first basemen with a .697 slugging percentage and a .995 fielding percentage.
Bischoff returned to the all-conference squad in his sophomore season after earning second team All-Big Ten honors as a starting pitcher in 2007, a year that also earned him Freshman of the Year honors. Bischoff, a right-handed pitcher from Decatur, Ind., was 5-1 on the mound in Big Ten play as the No.1 starter in the Purdue rotation. With Bischoff on the hill, Purdue was 7-1 in conference weekends in opening games.
Wolgamot, Haveman, Lindblom and Jansen are all first-time Big Ten postseason honorees.
Wolgamot, a junior second baseman from Danville, Ill., batted .426 in Big Ten play and .409 overall in 2008. In conference play, Wolgamot led all other Big Ten second basemen in batting average (.426), on-base percentage (.538), runs scored (30) and walks (21). Wolgamot is in his first season at Purdue after transferring from Danville College.
Haveman of Zeeland, Mich., won the 2008 Big Ten Conference batting title with a .444 average in conference play, becoming the second consecutive Boilermaker to lead the conference in batting (White batted .463 in 2007). Haveman's 52 conference hits were one shy of tying the Big Ten season record of 53 by Chris Getz of Michigan in 2005, and his .590 slugging percentage was the highest by a Big Ten outfielder in spite of being the Purdue leadoff hitter.
Lindblom of West Lafayette, Ind., tied a Big Ten Conference record with nine saves during the conference season. The right-handed junior fireballer had the best strikeout-to-walk ratio among conference relievers nomintated for all-conference honors, fanning 3.83 batters per free pass (23:6).
Jansen is a southpaw from Crown Point, Ind., who posted a 2-2 record with a 3.82 earned-run average in Big Ten play. The sophomore starting pitcher's conference ERA ranked as the third best among starting pitchers nominated for all-conference honors (behind only first teamers Zach Putnam and Chris Fetter of Michigan). Jansen tossed two complete games, including an 8-0 win over Ohio State at Bill Davis Stadium on April 19.
Purdue is the No. 2 seed at this weekend's Big Ten Tournament being played at Michigan's Ray Fisher Stadium. The Boilermakers received a bye Wednesday and will play their first game Thursday at 3:35 p.m. ET against Illinois, Ohio State or Penn State.
Purdue finished 2008 with a 30-24 win-loss record and was the runner-up to Michigan in the Big Ten Standings at 21-10. The Wolverines finished five games ahead at 26-5.
