Dave Gassner earned Big Ten pitcher of the week honors following a two-hit shutout at Indiana this past weekend. The senior from Hortonville, Wis., allowed just two hits on nine walks in a 1-0 victory over the Hoosiers. It marked his fifth complete game of the season, his second complete game shutout of the season.
Against the Hoosiers, Gassner gave up a leadoff single, then retired the next ten batters in a row. He also retired the final ten batters of the game.
In six Big Ten starts, Gassner is 5-1 with five complete games, a 2.47 ERA, 48 strikeouts and just seven walks over that span. His five victories and 48 strikeouts are tops among Big Ten pitchers in conference games. His 2.47 ERA ranks third.
With his nine strikeouts at Indiana, Gassner now has 208 for his career, which currently ranks fifth in school history. His 263.1 career innings pitched rank sixth on Purdue's all-time list.
Gassner joins David Harrell, who was honored by the Big Ten earlier this season as co-player of the week on April 16th for his late game heroics in two victories over Penn State.
