WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference has named Purdue-pitcher David Gassner (Hortonville, Wis., Hortonville High School) and Daryl Hallada (Janesville, Wis., Parker High School) Pitcher and Player-of-the-Week for the week ending Sunday, April 24. This is the second-consecutive weekend the Boilermakers' pitching staff has garnered the award after closer Andy Helmer was named co-pitcher of the week last week.
Gassner earned Pitcher-of-the-Week honors following his win over No. 25 Illinois. Gassner got the win in Game Two of the Boilermakers' sweep over the first-place Fighting Illini, with a final score of 9-2. Gassner went 7.0 innings for a complete game two hitter, allowing zero earned runs to the offensively-minded Illini. Gassner struck out two and walked one on his way to his fifth win of the season. Gassner bettered his overall ERA to 3.77 and his conference ERA to 2.27.
Hallada earned Player-of-the-Week honors after his commanding performance at the plate in the Illini series, and throughout the non-conference games with Indiana State and Illinois State. Hallada ended the week with a .450 batting average and four doubles. The senior hit .571 against the Illinois pitching staff, notching three doubles eight RBI, including a 3-for-4, four RBI game in the Boilers' 9-2 win in Game Two of the four game set. Hallada raised his overall batting average to .288 and is now batting .383 in conference play.
With the help of Gassner and Hallada, Purdue jumps to 28-14 overall and 13-7 in the conference, for a third-place tie in the Big Ten. The 2000 Boilermakers have already surpassed their wins total from last season by four and their conference record from last season by three.
