Boilers in Pro Ball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-- As the professional baseball season gets underway at both the Major and Minor League levels this week, a number of former Purdue baseball players have received their Minor League assignments.

Two former Boilermakers will start the season at the Triple-A level. Josh Lindblom (2007-08) is on the Oakland A's 40-man roster and will begin the season with the Sacramento River Cats of the Pacific Coast League. Lindblom was traded from the Rangers to the A's in December after pitching in eight games (five starts) for Texas last season. The Lafayette native has also pitched for the Dodgers and Phillies during his career.

Dan Black (2007-09) has moved up in the Chicago White Sox organization to the Charlotte Knights of the International League. The switch-hitting first baseman is a three-time MiLB.com Organizational All-Star and helped the Birmingham Knights win the Southern League (Double-A) title last season.

The three Boilermakers that were selected in the first 10 rounds of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft will all start the season at Double-A. Cameron Perkins (2010-12), Kevin Plawecki (2010-12) and Nick Wittgren (2011-12) continue to move up the ladder in their organizations after helping lead Purdue to the 2012 Big Ten title. Perkins (Reading Fightin Phils), Plawecki (Binghamton Mets) and their one-time Purdue teammate Matt Bischoff (Purdue 2007-10, Bowie Baysox) will all begin the season in the Eastern League. There could be as many as six series in the Eastern League this season in which former Boilers are on opposite teams.

Wittgren was named the Relief Pitcher of the Year by MiLB.com last year and finished the season closing games for the Jacksonville Suns of the Double-A Southern League. He'll begin this season in Jacksonville. Black, Lindblom, Plawecki and Wittgren all spent time in Major League spring training camps this year. Last fall, Perkins and Wittgren were selected to play in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. Black and Plawecki joined them as midseason all-stars in their respective leagues last summer.

Brad Schreiber (2010-13) begins his first season of pro ball in the Tampa Bay Rays' farm system with the Bowling Green Hot Rods of the Class A Midwest League. Robert Ramer (2010-13) also got a chance to pitch professionally after closing out his college career last year. He resigned with the Evansville Otters of the independent Frontier League, which begins its schedule in mid-May.

Andy Loomis (2007-08) suffered an arm injury during the second half of last season while pitching for the Double-A Bowie Baysox. He is rehabbing and looking to return to the mound at some point this year.

More updates about alumni in pro ball will be posted at the active minor leaguers pageas they become available.
