WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Jay Buente, a senior from Evansville, Ind., was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, according to a release from the conference office.
Making his first outing as the Friday starter for the Boilermakers, Buente dominated the batting order from Louisiana-Lafayette in a 5-1 opening-day win. In eight innings, Buente allowed just two hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters. Buente did not allow a hit until the fifth inning with two outs.
The honor is the first for Buente as a Boilermaker, and he is the first Purdue pitcher to receive the weekly award since May 23, 2005, when Mitch Pruemer was named Pitcher of the Week for his performance vs. Indiana.
Buente and the rest of the Boilermakers return to the diamond on Friday in Chapel Hill for the first of a three-game set with North Carolina.
