WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Jack Picchiotti, Cody Strong and Steve Maniago each had at least three hits as the Gold Team pounded out 15 to win the fifth and deciding game of Purdue baseball's Black and Gold Series, 6-3, Friday evening at Alexander Field.

Josh Estill connected for a pair of solo home runs for the Black Team, going deep to left field to lead off the second and fourth innings. But led by Tim McElroy's 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief, the Gold Team's bullpen worked 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball to close out the win. Gavin Downs struck out the Black Team's 6-7-8 hitters in order in the bottom of the ninth.

The Gold Team had at least one base runner in every inning and also had two runners thrown out at the plate. The Gold Team plated a run with two outs in each of the five innings in which it scored. Maniago (two), Conner Hudnall, Strong and PIcchiotti each recorded a two-out RBI.

Kyle Wood (2-0) contributed to the win on the mound and at the plate for the Gold Team. He struck out five over 3 2/3 innings of two-run ball as the starting pitcher. As the No. 5 hitter in the lineup, he doubled and scored twice.

McElroy retired seven of the eight batters he faced, striking out three. Brett Haan worked three innings of one-run ball for the Black Team in his second successful extended relief outing of the series.

Picchiotti singled four times and the Gold Team went on to score in three of the four frames in which he delivered a hit. Strong singled in each of his first three at-bats. He finished the series 11-for-22 with five runs scored and no strikeouts.

Maniago singled in each of his final three at-bats Friday. Patrick O'Brien walked three times in the nine hole for the Gold Team.

The Gold Team batted .341 in the series while its pitching staff recorded 36 strikeouts vs. 14 walks in 43 innings. Black Team pitchers issued 29 free passes (20 walks, 9 HBP). But the Black Team did perform better defensively, committing only three errors vs. nine by the Gold Team.

The Boilermakers begin preseason practice Jan. 24 and open their 2014 season the weekend of Feb. 14-16 at a three-team tournament hosted by the University of Tennessee.
