WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sean McHugh and Stephen Talbott both drove in a pair of runs for their respective teams, but game three of Purdue baseball's Black and Gold Series was tied 4-4 after nine innings when the game was suspended until next week.
The Black team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on an RBI single from Jon Bradford in the second inning and a two-run double from Talbott in the following frame.
The Gold team got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. McHugh gave his team the lead with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth.
Kyle Upp's two-out, run-scoring double in the bottom of the sixth plated Talbott and knotted the score.
Gavin Downs, Blake Mascarello, Matt Gibbs and Brett Andrzejewski all excelled on the mound. Downs started for the Black team and kept the opposition off the scoreboard until the fourth, surrendering two runs on two hits over his four innings. Mascarello worked three scoreless innings of relief. He induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play in the sixth inning and stranded a pair of base runners in the eighth.
Gibbs took over on the mound for the Gold team in the fourth inning and retired six of the first seven batters he faced on the way to working three innings of one-run ball. Andrzejewski impressed in relief for the second game in a row, retiring six of the seven batters he faced over two innings of scoreless relief.
Game four of the five-game series is set for Tuesday. The Black team won the first two games of instrasquad series.
