WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Robert Ramer worked five scoreless innings and freshmen Conner Hudnall and Stefano Belmonte teamed up for five hits and three runs scored, leading the Gold Team to a 5-3 victory in the opener of Purdue baseball's Black and Gold Series Thursday evening at Alexander Field.
The rest of the schedule for the five-game series calls for games on Friday at 7:20 p.m., Sunday at 2:20 p.m., Tuesday at TBA and Thursday at TBA. All Black and Gold Series games at the program's new Alexander Field are open to the public.
Hudnall singled and scored and Belmonte recorded an RBI in each frame as the Gold Team scored in the second and fourth innings to take an early 3-0 lead. Hudnall finished the night 3-for-4 and Belmonte was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
Jack Picchiotti, Kyle Wood and Mike Mullen each had two hits for the Black Team, which scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run game only to see the Gold Team answer back with a two spot in the top of the seventh.
Ramer surrendered four hits and issued one walk in his five innings. He gave up doubles to Wood in the first and third innings but kept the Black Team off the scoreboard. He cut down the lead runner at third base on an attempted sacrifice bunt after the first two men had reached safely in the fourth. Ramer then induced an inning-ending 5-3 double play turned by Belmonte at third base. The fifth-year senior also pitched over a leadoff single in the third.
Eddie De LaRiva started for the Black Team and worked the first two innings. After a 1-2-3 frame in the top of the first, he was one out away from getting out of the second when his former high school teammate, Belmonte, came through with a two-out single to left field.
A leadoff walk, base hit to right field and wild pitch helped the Gold Team score two runs on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Patrick Kenney and Belmonte in the fourth. After the Black Team made it a 3-2 game with two runs in the sixth, a leadoff single from Belmonte, an error and a sacrifice bunt helped the Gold Team get both runs right back. Bennett Oliver plated Belmonte with a sac fly and Kyle Johnson followed with a two-out RBI single.
The Black Team brought the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth after a leadoff double from Angelo Cianfrocco, but Jordan Minch retired the next three batters in order, the final two on strikeouts, to close out the win with the last of his three innings of relief. Cianfrocco also walked twice.
Doubles from Picchiotti and Mike Mullen lead to runs for the Black Team. Consecutive two-out RBI singles from Cody Strong and Mack Mattke drove home runs in the sixth inning. Picchiotti plated Mullen with an RBI ground out to the right side following a base hit up the middle from Brandon Krieg in the seventh.
