WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Quality outings from Eddie De LaRiva and Matt Frawley on the mound coupled with an early four-run rally propelled the Black Team to a 4-2 victory Thursday afternoon in the opener of Purdue baseball's annual five-game Black and Gold Series at Alexander Field.

Frawley worked 3 2/3 innings of two-hit relief, retiring 11 of the 14 batters he faced while striking out three. Patrick Kenney closed out the game by striking out the lone batter he faced with the potential tying run at the plate.

De LaRiva (1-0) did not issue a walk over five innings of two-run ball as the starter for the Black Team.

The Black Team had four hits during their four-run second inning rally. But the key play of the frame was a two-out throwing error that allowed the game's first two runs to score. Ted Snidanko (triple) and Jack Amaro (single) followed with consecutive two-out RBI hits. Back-to-back singles from Kyle Upp and Drew Rosbottom ignited the rally.

Amaro finished the day 3-for-4. Matthew McHugh went 3-for-4 for the Gold Team. Rosbottom had a pair of hits while Hayden Grant (Black), Cody Strong (Gold) and Jeff Evak (Gold) also reached base safely twice. Grant executed a pair of sacrifice bunts as well.

Sean McHugh delivered the big hit of the day for the Gold Team, tripling home a pair with two outs in the third inning to cut the Black Team's lead in half. Evak and Strong had singled in front of the Gold Team's captain.

Matt Gibbs impressed in relief for the Gold Team, working 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief and striking out three. He retired eight of the 10 batters he faced and pitched over a leadoff walk and a leadoff single in back-to-back frames.

Gold Team starter Mike Lutz (0-1) was not charged with an earned run over 4 1/3 innings of seven-hit ball. He bounced back from the long second inning with a 1-2-3 third vs. the Black Team's 4-5-6 hitters.

Game two of the five-game series is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m. Every game of the Black and Gold Series is open to the public at Alexander Field.
