Wood was a four-year varsity starter at St. Laurence High School in suburban Chicago Burbank, Ill.... two-time First Team All-State honoree as an upperclassman finished his high school career with .445 batting average and 31 home runs... batted .538 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs while also posting a 7-2 record with 73 strikeouts, a 1.72 ERA and a .162 batting average against in 53 innings pitched to earn Catholic League MVP honors as a junior... did not pitch as a senior due to an elbow injury but still batted .476 with 18 extra-base hits and 31 RBIs... Lawless Award winner as the Catholic League's most outstanding senior...
