McHugh played in 17 games, starting five times... started all three games of the Penn State series at third base... also started the Louisville game at third base, the opener of the Michigan series at first base and the middle game of the Southern Illinois series at designated hitter... pitched in games at Tennessee and San Diego State... despite going just 3-for-34 for the season, only struck out in three of his 37 plate appearances... first collegiate hit was a pinch-hit single in the finale of the Illinois series... led off the 11th inning of the series-opening at Michigan State with a base hit... walked twice against Louisville... walked and scored a run in the nightcap of the Penn State doubleheader... had a base hit and played all 12 innings in the series opener with Michigan. McHugh was a four-year letter-winner for coach Jon Pittenger at Blue Valley North High School in suburban Kansas City... two-way standout helped Blue Valley North win the 6A Kansas state title as a junior... batted .442 with 41 RBI and went 6-1 with a 0.98 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched to earn second team all-state as well as first team all-league and first team all-metro honors as a junior... batted .333 with 28 RBI in 19 games while also compiling a 1.70 ERA on the mound as a senior... second team all-league performer as a sophomore and senior batted .390 with 31 RBI and 2.10 ERA his sophomore year... helped his team win the Eastern Kansas League title as a freshman... also played four years of basketball, garnering all-league honors in his upperclassman seasons... averaged 11 points per game as a senior and was named the player of the week of for the state of Kansas... four-year principal's honor roll student... three-year member of Future Business Leaders of America...
