Buckeyes Defeat Purdue in Big Ten Tournament Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Ohio State sophomore starting pitcher Eric Thompson (10-2) scattered 12 hits over nine innings and senior third baseman Chris Bailey drove in three runs to lead the 22nd ranked (USA Today/Baseball Weekly) Buckeyes to a 4-2 victory against Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament opener. The win upped Ohio State's record to 40-16, giving the program six 40-win seasons in the last seven and was OSU Coach Bob Todd's 400th as the Buckeye head man.

Thompson pitched in place of Buckeye ace and 1997 Big Ten pitcher of the Year Justin Fry, who missed the game due to strep throat, and stranded nine Purdue baserunners while surrendering just one extra-base hit among the Boilermakers' 12 safeties. He was aided by some outstanding Buckeye defense, particularly during the third inning when Purdue had four hits, but failed to plate a run as OSU outfielders threw out two runners at the plate.

Clinging to a 2-1 lead following Bailey's two-out, two-run single in the second inning, Thompson gave up a single to Todd Ellinger to open the top of the third. Ellinger stole second and Thompson got Rod Metzler to foul out to the third baseman. The next batter, Boilermaker catcher Anthony Grieco singled to right field and Ellinger attempted to score on the play, but he was gunned down at home by OSU freshman Dan Zabloudil. Purdue followed with two more singles, the second of a which was a shot to left field by Bill Bennett. This time, Grieco attempted to score, but was cut down by freshman Jason Driscoll at the plate to end the inning.

"It took the confidence - well maybe not the confidence, but the wind out of them," Driscoll said. "They had two men in scoring position and got big hits, but came away without scoring."

Ohio State scratched for a single run in the fourth on a Bailey groundout to increase the lead to 3-1. Purdue countered with a run in the fifth to close to 3-2, but Thompson buckled down from that point, limiting the Boilers to just one hit and a walk over the final four frames to close the door. The Scarlet and Gray added an insurance run in the sixth when Driscoll knocked in OSU junior Mike Kremblas with a double to make the score 4-2. Kremblas, the '97 first team all-Big Ten catcher had three of the Buckeyes' nine hits on the day and scored three runs.

Ohio State, the second seed in the tourney, will meet the winner of Thursday's second game between fourth seed Illinois and top seed and host Michigan at 3:30 p.m. EDT Friday. Third seed Purdue will play the loser of that contest. Fry who is 9-2 on the season, rested today and will pitch Friday if he is able. If he is unable to go, sophomore Kurt Fullenkamp (7-1) will take the hill for Ohio State.
