Purdue Defeats Indiana, 8-5

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team clinched a spot in the Big Ten Tournament with an 8-5 victory over Indiana on Sunday. The Boilermakers (28-23 overall, 17-11 Big Ten) swept the four game series from the Hoosiers.

Purdue took an early lead on a two-run home run by senior catcher Anthony Grieco in the top of the first. The Hoosiers cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

The Boilermakers extended the lead with three runs on four hits in the fourth. After Indiana scored one in the fifth, Purdue jumped out to a six-run lead, scoring three in the seventh. Junior Robb Ramacher walked, and senior Rod Metzler followed with a single. Grieco and junior Bill Bennett hit consecutive doubles, giving the Boilers an 8-2 advantage.

Indiana answered with a run in the seventh. In the eighth, the Hoosiers scored two and then loaded the bases, but Purdue stopped the rally with a 1-2-3 double play.

Boilermaker senior Matt Luce pitched seven innings for his sixth victory of the season. Senior Mike Hedman picked up the first save of his career with two scoreless innings of relief. Grieco finished with three hits and three RBI, while Metzler went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Purdue will play a double-header with IUPUI on May 12 at Lambert Field to close out the regular season. The Big Ten Tournament takes place from May 14-18.
