Boilermakers Squeak by Spartans

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Led by the strong performance of pitcher Mike Hedman, Purdue defeated Michigan State, 4-3.

Hedman went the distance for the Boilermakers (12-18), allowing just four hits, one walk and one earned run.

Brian Murphy was almost as impressive for Michigan State (14-19), surrendering nine hits and only two earned runs in his eight innings of work.

Purdue designated hitter Bill Bennett put his club on the board first with a two-run single in the second.

But the Spartans answered with three of their own in the fifth, the first coming as Tom Hartley tripled in Marty Patterson.

In the seventh, Boilermaker shortstop Daryl Hallada singled in two, providing the margin of difference.
