Baseball Drops Game to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS - The Purdue baseball team lost 8-5 to Minnesota in the Metrodome tonight. The loss drops Purdue to 8-13 (2-3 Big Ten), while the Golden Gophers improve to 12-9 (1-0 Big Ten).

Senior catcher Anothony Grieco hit a 421-foot home run to lead off the fourth inning and the Boilers rallied in the sixth, but is was not enough to fight off Minnesota. In the sixth, sophomore third baseman Ryan Cole hit a double that knocked in two runs to knot the score at 5-5. However, the Gophers countered with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull away for the victory.

Justin Pederson (2-2) picked up the win for Minnesota and teammate Ted Zrust was credited with his third save. Senior Chris Bloomer (2-1) suffered the loss on the mound for Purdue. Purdue scored its five runs on eight hits, committing one error, while Minnesota scored eight runs on 14 hits in error-free ball.

Purude continues its series with Minnesota with a double-header in the Metrodome tomorrow. The series will conclude with a single game on Mar. 30.
