Boilers Douse Flames

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Purdue baseball team ended its five-game losing streak with a twinbill sweep of Liberty in Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday. The Boilermakers (5-9) won the first game 16-9 and took the nightcap 5-4 in eight innings.

In game one, Purdue pounded out 14 hits, six for extra bases. Designated hitter Bill Bennett drove in five runs on three hits, including a two-run double and a three-run home run. Second baseman Rod Metzler went 3-for-3 with four walks and four runs scored for Purdue. Senior right-hander Matt Luce picked up the victory, striking out five in seven innings.

Purdue received a strong pitching effort in game two. Freshman lefty Russ Morgan went six innings allowing only three hits while fanning four, but junior Jason Howard picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Third baseman Ryan Cole led the Boilermakers with three hits, while centerfielder Hank Walker went 1-for-2 with three RBI.

Purdue will face Indiana State on March 18 at 4 p.m. in Terre Haute.
