Purdue senior Phil Davis became the third Boilermaker in the last three years to sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks when he signed a free agent contract on May 22. Davis will report to the Diamondbacks' mini-camp in Tucson, Ariz. on June 8. He will be assigned to their rookie team in Alberta, Canada a few weeks after. Davis joins Beau Baltzell ('96) and Chris Bloomer ('97) as the only Boilers to sign with the Phoenix-based expansion team. The hard-throwing right-hander went 1-5 with a 10.62 ERA in 15 games in 1998. He struck out 33 hitters in 40.2 innings. In six Big Ten games, Davis was 1-3 with a 9.39 ERA.
