Feb. 26, 1998
The Purdue baseball team travels to Evansville, Ind., for the 7-Up Diamond Classic on Feb. 27-March 1. This is the first year of the tournament, which is comprised of Indiana teams. Along with the Boilers, Indiana State, Ball State, Indiana, Butler, Valparaiso, Notre Dame and host Evansville will all compete. Each team will play three games, with Purdue taking on Valparaiso at 3:00 p.m. in the first round. The Boilermakers (1-2) lost a three-game series to Louisville last weekend, but they showed some promise at the plate. Purdue senior designated hitter Bill Bennett enters the tournament with a 32-game on-base streak dating back to last season. He hit .400 (6-for-15) against Louisville with three doubles and four RBI. Sophomore Chris Walker also had a big series, going 6-for-10 with three RBI and four stolen bases. The Boilers also got big contributions from the freshman class as well. Infielder/pitcher Austin Bilke went 2-for-2 with three RBI and also pitched four scoreless innings in relief, picking up the lone Purdue victory. Second basemen David Blomberg and Nate Sickler hit a combined 4-for-13 while both played flawless defense.
