Fly Your Flag
Boilermaker fans are encouraged to fly a Purdue flag through Saturday's football game against Penn State.
In July, Purdue athletics director Morgan Burke and head football coach Danny Hope joined Lafayette mayor Tony Roswarski and West Lafayette mayor John Dennis to announce "Boilermaker Revelry," asking fans to fly Purdue flags for all home football game weekends this season.
In addition, Purdue and Greater Lafayette area leaders have a new initiative this fall that promises to be a win-win for the football team and the local community. Individuals and businesses are encouraged throughout the football season to create displays at their home or business showing Purdue spirit, with the goal of creating a greater sense of community. Prizes are awarded to winners of the contest for each home football game weekend.
Photos must be submitted by noon on Wednesdays the week prior to home football games. Voting then takes place on the Purdue Athletics Storefront Contest Facebook page from Thursday at noon until 12 a.m. on Wednesday. To submit an entry or vote, click here.
The entrant with the most votes receives a grouping of game tickets, refreshments and a gift certificate, all delivered to the site of the winning display by the Boilermaker Special. In addition, a photo of the week's winning Spirit Maker display will be featured for four days on Purdue's home page as a banner image and appear on the video screen at the football game. One voter from each week's voting also will be randomly selected for a prize. Download the contest rules for more details.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The sixth Boiler Bridge Walk of the 2012 Purdue football season is set for Friday. It will be followed by the sixth pep rally.
Every Friday before home games, members of the Purdue football team meet and greet their fellow citizens of Lafayette and West Lafayette as they walk across the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge.
Fans of all ages are invited to join Purdue Pete, the spirit squad, Boilermaker Special and community leaders.
The team is dropped off near the Sonya L. Margerum Fountain on the West Lafayette side of the bridge and walk across to Riehle Plaza. Team members hand out giveaway items each week.
This week's sponsors are St. Elizabeth Hospital, which supplied the water bottles that the players will give out; Cold Stone Creamery, which will serve ice cream samples, caramel apples and hot chocolate; and White Castle, which will pass out coupons.
The Boiler Bridge Walk gets under way when the team arrives around 5:40 p.m., but fans should arrive early to get a good spot on the Myers Bridge.
The pep rally will start at 7 p.m. at the Class of 1980 courtyard between the Purdue Memorial Union and Stewart Center and run approximately 45 minutes. Purdue Pete, the spirit squad and pep band will be on hard, as well as the Goldusters. Two Purdue players will address the crowd. The Purdue Dance Marathon morale committee will perform a dance as additional entertainment.
Pappy's Sweet Shop will give the first 100 Purdue students free pork chops, chips and a beverage (while supplies last), and also will be handing out ice cream scoops redeemable for free ice cream. The first 150 students who show their VIP card or game ticket for Saturday's football game against Penn State will receive a t-shirt.
Saturday is Military Appreciation Day.
