WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The volleyball team won three Big Ten matches in a span of five days: Oct. 18 at Iowa, Oct. 19 at No. 8 Nebraska and Oct. 22 vs. Indiana. The 21st-ranked Boilermakers now are 14-6 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten heading into their Saturday match at No. 17 Michigan.
Junior setter/outside hitter Val Nichol was named Big Ten Player of the Week for her efforts in the wins at Iowa and Nebraska. She averaged 3.00 kills, 3.00 digs and 7.71 assists per set while hitting .571 against the Hawkeyes and .545 against the Cornhuskers. Nichol is Purdue's first Player of the Week since Ariel Turner received the accolade on Nov. 26, 2012.
Soccer Set for Stretch Run
The soccer team is down to its final three games of the regular season, and the stretch run begins at 7 o'clock tonight when the team faces off with Indiana in the annual Golden Boot game at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex. The Boilermakers (8-7-1, 3-5-0 Big Ten) then play host to Minnesota at 1 p.m. Sunday for Senior Day before finishing up at Iowa on Nov. 2. Seniors Shae Desmond, Jordan Frick, Clara Kridler, Jordan Pawlik and Hadley Stuart will be recognized at the Minnesota game. Together, they have made a combined 195 starts.
The top eight teams make the Big Ten Tournament, which will be played Nov. 6 to 10 in Champaign, Ill. Purdue currently is in ninth place with nine points, while Illinois and Iowa are tied for seventh place with 10 points. Click here for the current conference standings.
Purdue Prepping for Big Ten Cross Country Championships
Purdue will play host the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Nov. 3. The men's 8K race is scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m., followed by the women's 6K race at 11:45 a.m. It marks the first time since 2002 that the Boilermakers have hosted the championships. Bissett Named Big Ten Diver of the Week
Junior Jamie Bissett was named Big Ten Diver of the Week after winning the 1-meter event in a dual at Miami (Ohio) last Friday with a personal-best score of 375.66. Bissett also placed third in the 3-meter event with a score of 342.22. Both of his marks were NCAA Zone-qualifying scores.
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams compete in the Indiana Intercollegiates beginning at noon Saturday at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Fourteen teams, representing eight colleges from around the state, are expected to have athletes in attendance.
The men's basketball team has two exhibition games scheduled - Oct. 30 vs. Indianapolis at 7 p.m. and Nov. 4 vs. Wayne State (Neb.) at 7 p.m. - while the women's basketball team will play one vs. Clarke on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. The men's squad also will have an open practice from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Mackey Arena. Football has its second open Saturday of the season this week, then plays five games in the month of November: Ohio State (Nov. 2 at noon), Iowa (Nov. 9), at Penn State (Nov. 16), Illinois (Nov. 23) and at Indiana (Nov. 30) ... Both golf teams wrap up their fall seasons this weekend in North Carolina. The women are at the Landfill Tradition in Wilmington on Friday and Saturday, while the men are at the Bridgestone Collegiate in Greensboro on Saturday and Sunday ... Men's tennis plays host to the Big Ten Singles Championships Friday through Monday at the Schwartz Tennis Center ... The women's tennis doubles team of Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany went 3-1 at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships last weekend. The duo went into the tournament ranked No. 12 nationally and is now 5-5 on the fall season. The Boilermakers conclude fall play at the Midwest Blast Nov. 1 to 3 in Champaign, Ill. ... Earlier this week, the John Purdue Club announced details about 2013-14 men's basketball season parking.
