Fly Your Flag
Boilermaker fans are encouraged to fly a Purdue flag through Saturday's football game against Wisconsin.
In July, Purdue athletics director Morgan Burke and head football coach Danny Hope joined Lafayette mayor Tony Roswarski and West Lafayette mayor John Dennis to announce "Boilermaker Revelry," asking fans to fly Purdue flags for all home football game weekends this season.
In addition, Purdue and Greater Lafayette area leaders have a new initiative this fall that promises to be a win-win for the football team and the local community. Individuals and businesses are encouraged throughout the football season to create displays at their home or business showing Purdue spirit, with the goal of creating a greater sense of community. Prizes are awarded to winners of the contest for each home football game weekend.
Photos must be submitted by noon on Wednesdays the week prior to home football games. Voting then takes place on the Purdue Athletics Storefront Contest Facebook page from Thursday at noon until 12 a.m. on Wednesday. To submit an entry or vote, click here.
The entrant with the most votes receives a grouping of game tickets, refreshments and a gift certificate, all delivered to the site of the winning display by the Boilermaker Special. In addition, a photo of the week's winning Spirit Maker display will be featured for four days on Purdue's home page as a banner image and appear on the video screen at the football game. One voter from each week's voting also will be randomly selected for a prize. Download the contest rules for more details.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The fifth Boiler Bridge Walk of the 2012 Purdue football season is set for Friday.
Every Friday before home games, members of the Purdue football team meet and greet their fellow citizens of Lafayette and West Lafayette as they walk across the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge.
Fans of all ages are invited to join Purdue Pete, the spirit squad, Boilermaker Special and community leaders.
The team is dropped off near the Sonya L. Margerum Fountain on the West Lafayette side of the bridge and walk across to Riehle Plaza. Team members hand out giveaway items each week.
This week's sponsors are St. Elizabeth Hospital, which supplied the water bottles that the players will give out, and Kathy's Kandies, which will be serving sweet treats.
The Boiler Bridge Walk gets under way when the team arrives around 5:40 p.m., but fans should arrive early to get a good spot on the Myers Bridge.
In lieu of the normal Friday night pep rally, fans are invited to attend The Tip-Off Before the Kickoff at Mackey Arena for a football pep rally and basketball start-of-practice event. The Tip-Off Before the Kickoff is open to anyone and admission is free. The doors to Mackey Arena will open at 8 p.m.
Kickoff for Saturday's Homecoming game is noon ET, and tickets are available. Click here for more information or here to purchase online.
Saturday is the Boilermakers' Gold & Black Game, and fans are encouraged to wear either gold or black, depending on where their seats are located.
Fans with tickets in sections 101 through 105 - the primary area for visitor seating - are asked to wear gold, while the Purdue student sections, 106 through 115, wear black. Sections 116 through 124 will don gold and sections 125 through 134 go with black.
Specially designed t-shirts promoting the game are available in gold and black colors. They are available online as well as at Follett's and Purdue Pride.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the shirts go to the 12th Boiler Scholarship Fund in the John Purdue Club to help endow a Purdue football scholarship.
