WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 2013-14 Purdue athletics year officially gets under way today as the soccer team hosts the 13th edition of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. The Boilermakers entertain Akron at 7 p.m., while North Dakota and Xavier gets things started at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Akron plays North Dakota at 11 a.m. and Purdue takes on Xavier at 2 p.m. The Boilermakers have a 16-5-3 record in the tournament and have won it six times.
Final Volleyball Tune-up
The volleyball team will scrimmage against an all-star roster of former players at 6 p.m. Saturday in the final tune-up for the regular season. All-Americans Stephanie Lynch Harpenau, Jaclyn Hart Groves and Renata Dargan Vonesh are among the alumnae expected to play. Sixteenth-ranked Purdue opens the 2013 campaign a week from today by playing host to the Mortar Board Premier. The Boilermakers face No. 4 USC at 7 p.m.
Track and Field Quartet Competing at Pan-Am Junior Championships
Four members of the track and field program will represent their countries this weekend in Medellin, Columbia, at the 2013 Pan-Am Junior Championships. Coy Blair (shot put), Matthew McClintock (10,000 meters) and Tate Schienbein (3,000-meter steeplechase) will represent the United States, while Vanessa McLeod (800 meters) will compete for Canada.
Boilermaker Tailgate on the Circle
The highly anticipated Boilermaker Tailgate on the Circle is a week from today. Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis will be a sea of black and gold as Purdue fans gather for a super-sized pep rally from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to send off the football team as it heads to Cincinnati for the season opener the following day. The tailgate will include the full game-day cast, including the entire team, first-year head coach Darrell Hazell, cheerleaders, pep band, Purdue Pete, the World's Largest Drum and the Boilermaker Special. Special guests expected to be present are Purdue President Mitch Daniels; athletics director Morgan Burke; and other notable Purdue graduates, including event emcees Angela Buchman and Kevin Gregory, past Miss Indiana MerrieBeth Cox, and numerous Boilermaker football and basketball legends. The festive rally will feature an all-star fleet of tailgate vehicles displayed around Monument Circle, plus vendor food trucks (including campus favorites Arni's and Triple XXX); a beer garden featuring Sun King Brewing; an autograph area highlighting past football all-stars; and logo merchandise for purchase. The Tailgate on the Circle is sponsored and organized by the Boiler Business Exchange of Indianapolis.
Take a Kid to the Game
The football team's home opener - Sept. 7 vs. Indiana State at noon - has been designated as Take a Kid to the Game day. Youth tickets are available for $5 in the Touchdown and North End Zone sections with the purchase of an adult ticket. The easiest way to order tickets is to simply click here.
