WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Raise the curtain.

The 2014-15 Purdue sports year begins in earnest today, as the soccer team plays host to the 14th edition of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup at the Boilermaker Soccer Complex.

After Butler and Ohio meet at 4 p.m., Purdue takes on Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m. Action resumes Sunday, with Butler vs. Miami (Ohio) at 11 a.m. and Purdue vs. Ohio at 2 p.m. The Boilermakers have a 17-6-3 record in the tournament and have won it six times.

On Saturday evening at 6 o'clock, the volleyball team has an exhibition match against program alumnae on Belin Court in Holloway Gymnasium, in advance of the season-opening Mortar Board Premier next weekend. All-American setters Renata (Dargan) Vonesh (2002-05) and Jaclyn (Hart) Groves (2007-10) will lead the alumnae team.

Football debuts Aug. 30 against Western Michigan. Kickoff is noon at Ross-Ade Stadium. The cross country teams also get under way that day at the Belmont Opener in Nashville, Tenn.

Boilers Back In Action

On Sunday night - the eve of the start of the fall semester - Purdue student-athletes, coaches and administrators will gather for Boilers Back in Action. The annual kickoff to the school year will feature awards and honors for teams and individuals.

Boiler Bridge Walk Postponed Until 2015

Due to pending construction on the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge, the popular Boiler Bridge Walk will not take place this season, but will return in 2015.

For the last four years, every Friday before home games, members of the Purdue football team have met and greeted their fellow citizens of Lafayette and West Lafayette as they walked across the Myers Bridge.

On Aug. 29, the day before this season's opening game, a spirited team kickoff event will take place from 5:30 to 6 p.m. on the Sally & Bob Weist Plaza between Mackey Arena and Holloway Gymnasium. There will be music and interactive games, and Miracles Rehabilitation will provide a promotional item for the Boilermaker players and coaches to give out to fans in attendance.
