WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In response to the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday, the Purdue Athletics Department has announced there will be increased security at all home events this weekend.

All bags carried in by spectators will be searched, and a uniformed police officer will be visible at all venues.

"We feel the need to have a measured response without overreacting," said Steve Simmerman, Purdue associate athletics director for facilities. "Our goal is to raise awareness and do what's prudent to help our fans feel comfortable attending our events."

Scheduled weekend events include baseball at Alexander Field (Friday through Sunday), softball at the Boilermaker Softball Complex (Friday through Sunday), women's tennis at the Schwartz Tennis Center (Friday and Sunday), men's and women's track and field at Rankin Track and Field (Friday and Saturday), men's golf at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex (Saturday and Sunday), and volleyball at Holloway Gymnasium (Saturday).

Police chiefs at the state's major universities have conferred, and there is no specific threat on any of the campuses.
