WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Four Purdue student athletic trainers came to the rescue of a runner who was found unconscious north of Ross-Ade Stadium last Saturday. While setting up for the football team's scrimmage around 9:15 a.m., juniors Shelby Heilman, Erica Illium, Jennifer Vande Loo and Adrian Yepez discovered an elderly man lying face down on the pavement, his face purple in color and bleeding from one of his temples. He was not breathing and did not have a pulse. Another bystander had called 911. After rolling the man over on to his back, Heilman and Illium began administering CPR via compressions, while Yepez stabilized the man's head and chest and opened his air way, and Vande Loo continued checking the man's pulse. Within a few minutes, a law enforcement officer arrived with a defibrillator and, shortly thereafter, an ambulance arrived. The man's pulse was restored, and he was taken away in the ambulance. For Heilman, it was the second time she was involved in administering CPR in a real-life situation.

Both the Boilermakers and the Hoosiers are 3-6 in Big Ten play, tied with Ohio State for seventh place. Purdue leads the all-time series 22-17 (it is 11-11 in games played in Bloomington), and the teams have split the last 10 meetings, dating to 2008.

Mingo Honored

Drey Mingo of the women's basketball team received the Brady Sports Achievement Award on Thursday night in Indianapolis. The Brady Sports Achievement Awards were established by the Methodist Sports Medicine Research and Education Foundation and are sponsored by ATI Physical Therapy to honor four Indiana student-athletes that have overcome injury or hardship. Mingo overcame a bout with bacterial meningitis and subsequent loss of hearing in November of 2010 and a season-ending knee injury in October of 2011 before finishing her career with the Boilermakers this season. She graduated last May with a degree in biology and a minor in Spanish and presently is pursuing a graduate degree in occupational and environmental health sciences.
