WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue maintained its position as the Big Ten's flagship women's golf program at last weekend's conference championships. In sharing the team title with Northwestern, the Boilermakers claimed their fourth league crown in the last six years (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013). Moreover, a Purdue player now has been the medalist for six consecutive years, as senior Paula Reto fired a four-under 212 to win her first conference championship. She follows previous Purdue champions Laura Gonzalez-Escallon (2012), Junthima Gulyanamitta (2011), Gonzalez-Escallon (2010), Maria Hernandez and Maude-Aimee LeBlanc (2009) and Hernandez (2008). The Boilermakers now have won six team conference championships, all since 2000 and all under 15th-year head coach Devon Brouse.
Women's Tennis NCAA Tournament Bound
The women's tennis team earned its second straight NCAA Tournament berth and will take on South Carolina on May 10 in Miami, Fla. The 28th-ranked Boilermakers are the No. 2 seed in their regional on the strength of a 17-5 record and third-place finish at the Big Ten Tournament. South Carolina has a 13-11 record and is ranked 33rd nationally. Sixth-ranked Miami takes on North Florida in another first-round match, and the winners will square off May 11 for the opportunity to go to Urbana, Ill., for the remaining championship rounds. In addition, junior Mara Schmidt and freshman Krisztina Kapitany earned an at-large selection to the NCAA Doubles Championships, which will take place May 22 to 27 in Urbana. Schmidt and Kapitany have a 15-6 record and are ranked 27th nationally. They are the first Purdue pair to qualify for the championships since 2000, when Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny did so.
Schenk Honored by Big Ten
Junior Adam Schenk was named to the six-player men's golf All-Big Ten first team. He is Purdue's first first team all-conference selection since 2007. Schenk, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2011, leads the Boilermakers with a 73.44 scoring average this season, posting five top-10 finishes. He earned a spot on the Big Ten Championships All-Championships Team after finishing in a fifth-place tie at the tournament in French Lick, Ind.
Entering its final three-game series of the season, the softball team can finish anywhere from sixth to 10th place in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers play host to Iowa today at 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Friday is Fan Appreciation Day, with free postgame pizza served to all fans while supply lasts. Sunday is Senior Day, and Purdue will honor first baseman Ashley Courtney, outfielder Maia Monchek and designated player Erika Petruzzi during pregame festivities beginning at 12:50 p.m. The Big Ten Tournament will run May 9 to 12 in Lincoln, Neb., with all 12 schools participating in the single-elimination event.
Versyp Inducted into New England Basketball Hall of Fame
Women's basketball coach Sharon Versyp is a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2013. She will be inducted June 22 at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. Versyp coached at the University of Maine from 2001 to 2005, compiling a 98-51 overall record (.658 winning percentage), including a 67-19 America East Conference mark (.779 winning percentage). Her teams won three consecutive conference championships (2003, 2004 and 2005) along with the 2004 conference tournament title. Versyp was named America East Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2005.
Boilermakers in the NFL
Following the NFL Draft - in which defensive tackle Kawann Short was selected in the second round (44th overall pick) by the Carolina Panthers, two Boilermakers signed free-agent contracts - cornerback Josh Johnson with the San Diego Chargers and running back Akeem Shavers with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Three other Boilermakers are taking part in rookie tryout camps: quarterback Robert Marve (Tampa Bay), offensive lineman Rick Schmeig (Jacksonville) and quarterback Caleb TerBush (Pittsburgh). And, after nine years in San Diego, linebacker Shaun Phillips signed a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos. Phillips has 69.5 career sacks.
The Golf Channel will air a segment on Pete and Alice Dye at approximately 3 p.m. ET on May 9 and 10 as part of its coverage of the Players Championship. The state of Indiana proudly lays claim to having more Pete Dye-designed courses than any other place in the world. The Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex is part of the Pete Dye Golf Trail, a collection of his courses in the state of Indiana intended as both a showcase for the golf traveler and a tribute to the golf visionary ...
