WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Big Ten Championships/Tournaments are currently under way for four Purdue teams: men's and women's golf in French Lick, Ind.; men's tennis at Ohio State; and women's tennis at Indiana. Men's tennis got things going with a 4-0 win over Wisconsin in first-round action Thursday. The victory snapped an 11-consecutive loss streak to the Badgers and marked Purdue's first shutout in the conference tournament since 2001.
Gustafson Receives Postgraduate Scholarship
Swimmer Lauren Gustafson has been selected to receive an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. A general health science major, Gustafson maintains a nearly spotless 3.99 grade-point average. She plans to attend graduate school at the Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis. The postgraduate scholarship consists of a $7,500 award to help with the cost of graduate school. Gustafson joins softball's Andrea Hillsey (2005) and basketball's Brittany Rayburn (2012) as recent Purdue student-athletes to be selected as NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.
Gonzalez-Escallon Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week
Senior Laura Gonzalez-Escallon was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after winning the Lady Buckeye Invitational last weekend and helping the Boilermakers to a second-place finish. The defending Big Ten Championship medalist won the first individual title of her senior season with a 221, carding a pair of 73s on Saturday and a 75 on Sunday to win by three strokes over Ohio State's Amy Meier. It marked the fourth career tournament championship for Gonzalez-Escallon and her fifth Big Ten Golfer of the Week honor.
Mingo Recognized by Athletes for a Better World
Drey Mingo of the women's basketball team was one of five finalists in the collegiate division for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup Award, presented by the Athletes for a Better World, which seeks to honor athletes who have demonstrated "the highest level of character and leadership off and on the field and for their contributions to sport and society." In addition to being involved in numerous community service initiatives, Mingo has started a not-for-profit entity, Sounds of Serenity. The goal of Sounds of Serenity is to raise awareness about and raise funds for hearing aids for children.
Baseball Erupts for 20 Runs
The baseball team scored a season-high 20 runs, including 15 in the second inning, en route to its first shutout of the season against Illinois-Chicago at Alexander Field on Wednesday. The Boilermakers last scored 20-plus runs in a 22-1 victory over Murray State on March 10, 2012. Seven of the nine batters in the Purdue lineup reached base safely twice in the second inning, when the Boilermakers sent 19 batters to the plate and collected 10 hits, four walks and a hit by pitch. Earlier this season, Purdue defeated Illinois-Chicago 17-10 in the Windy City.

The deadline for renewing football season tickets is Wednesday, May 1. The 2013 home schedule is arguably the best in school history. It includes 2012 national champion runner-up and intrastate rival Notre Dame (Sept. 14), Orange Bowl participant Northern Illinois (Sept. 28) and Big Ten Conference powers Nebraska (Oct. 12) and Ohio State (Nov. 2). Season tickets are the only way to guarantee a seat for the Notre Dame, Nebraska and Ohio State games, plus they reflect a savings of up to 56 percent on projected single-game prices and are the best seats in the stadium. Coaches Caravan Dates Announced
Dates for the 2013 Purdue Coaches Caravans have been announced by the John Purdue Club. They are May 23 (Lake County), June 1 (West Lafayette - John Purdue Club Day), June 4 (Evansville - lunch and Louisville - dinner), June 18 (Muncie - lunch and Fort Wayne - dinner) and July 30 (Indianapolis - Fall Kickoff Event). The National Football League draft got under way Thursday night with the first round. When Kawann Short gets picked, he will become the third Purdue defensive tackle selected in the last five drafts and the ninth defensive lineman in the last 10 ... Geoff Davis has the fourth-best high jump mark in the nation after clearing 2.24 meters (7-04.25) at the Sea Ray Relays earlier this month. That mark is a personal best for Davis and the second-best in program history behind Dave Glassburn's record of 2.25 meters (7-04.50) that has stood since 1987 ... Sam Ostarello has been named to the NetScouts Basketball Women's All-Star team and will represent the United States in a tournament in China, facing national teams from Australia, Brazil and China in a trio of three-game series from May 3 to 13.
