The Purdue Boilermaker women's cross country team finished 13th out of 31 teams at the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Region Championships at the Varsity Cross Country Course on Saturday, Nov. 16.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Michigan Wolverines claimed first and second places respectively, earning the region's two team automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.

Toledo's Briana Shook was the individual winner, running the 6,000m course in 20:47.1, a ten-second advantage oversecond place.

For the Boilermakers, local product Amber Ferner (So., West Lafayette) was the top finisher, placing 39th overall and 38th among scoring runners with a time of 22:20.3.

A trio of Purdue runners finished ina span of six runners, as senior Stephanie Lynn (Hillsdale, Ind.) crossed the line in 80th place (79th scoring) with a 23:13.3 mark. Christan Bahler (So., Kokomo, Ind.) circled the course in 23:15.6 for 83rd/82nd, and freshman Kaleena Cappel (Indianapolis) was 85th/84th with a time of 23:17.5.

The final scoring Boilermaker was junior Kara Lahey (Lockport, Ill.), who ran a 23:27.0 for 99th overall and 98th among scorers.

"No one on the team performed below the level expected of them," said head coach Mike Poehlein, "so I'm pleased with that fact. Our finish could have been higher, but we didn't have our expected lineup on the course.

"Jessie Wilder and Corrie Whisner were hampered with nagging injuries, so they were sidelined. Add that to the fact that we have been without (2001 Freshman of the Year) Lindsay Zinn this year, and I think you have to be proud of our athletes."

Sophomore Caitlin Baird (Muncie, Ind.) was the sixth Boilermaker across the finish line with a time of 24:10.2, finishing 130th overall (129th scoring), while Mia Burki (Jr., Indianapolis) ran a 24:22.7 for 143rd/142nd.
