WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin captured the 2008 NCAA Great Lakes Regional women's and men's championships, hosted by Purdue University at the Purdue Varsity Cross Country Course on Saturday. Michigan State senior Nicole Bush topped the women's 6K race with a time of 20:48.5, while Notre Dame senior Patrick Smyth finished atop the men's 10k leader board with a time of 31:06.4.
The University of Michigan women's team placed five runners in the top-25 to edge out the Wisconsin women's team with a score of 72-80. Michigan was led by runner-up, senior Nicole Edwards, who finished with a time of 20:57.4. Wisconsin placed a pair of runners in the top-10, senior Gwen Jorgensen and junior Hanna Grinaker, who placed third and ninth, respectively. Michigan and Wisconsin both advance to the 2008 NCAA Championships on Monday, November 24th in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Rounding out the top-five in the women's race were Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Indiana. Michigan State finished only three points out of second-place and an opportunity to advance to the championships. Michigan State will be sending two individuals to the championships, however. Regional champion Bush will be joined by teammate, sixth-place finisher senior Lisa Senakiewich. Other individuals advancing will be fourth-place finisher Indiana junior Wendi Robinson and fifth-place finisher Ohio junior Kari Summers.
The host Purdue women's cross country team finished its season with a 10th-place showing at the regional championships. They were led by junior Katie Morrical, who placed 29th with a time of 22:02.3.
The Wisconsin men's team used a quartet of top-10 finishers to capture their seventh-consecutive regional championship. They were led by fourth-place finisher, sophomore Lance Peacock,who was immediately followed by three more Badger runners. They finished with a team score of 39, distancing themselves from second place finisher Michigan, who also ran off a string of four-straight finishers, led by eighth-place senior Lex Williams. Wisconsin and Michigan's teams both advance to the 2008 NCAA Championships.
Those teams will be joined by four individuals from the regional. Along with Notre Dame's Smyth, other individuals advancing to the NCAA Championships will be runner-up Butler senior Andy Baker (31:12.5), third-place finisher Dayton sophomore Chris Lemon, and Miami (OH) senior Pat Sovacool.Rounding out the top-five teams in the men's race were Butler, Notre Dame and Indiana.
The Purdue men's team placed 15th with a team score of 429. They were led by sophomore Caden Shields, who placed 37th, with a time of 32:19.2
