WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue cross country teams return to action on Sunday as they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the 2012 Big Ten Cross Country Championshps. The women’s 6,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. ET followed by men’s 8,000-meter race at 11:45 a.m.

Sunday’s races will be held at the Forest Akers East Golf Course. The Boilermakers will send nine men and nine women to the race. On the women’s side, Samantha Walkow will be back in action. The senior had been out the previous two races, but will look to pick up where she left off earlier in the season. Walkow finished first for the Boilermakers in the first two races of the season with a first place and third place finish, respectively. The Big Ten Championships will be her first 6k of the season.

Kelly McCurdy and Dana Payonk will also race for the Boilermakers. McCurdy is the top returning finisher for Purdue from last year’s Big Ten Championships. The senior finished 53rd overall in 2011 and second on the team. Payonk finished third for Purdue and 64th overall in 2011. The sophomore has two top five finishes this season.  Blair Doney and Linsey Daluga are the only other Boilermakers competing that ran in last year’s conference race.

On the men’s side, Matthew McClintock looks to continue pacing the Purdue team. The freshman has taken to top spot on the team in all four meets this season. McClintock also has a pair of first place overall finishes. Johnnie Guy has been the number two guy on the team for the duration of the season. Guy has three top 10 finishes in his rookie season. Caleb Kerr has also come up strong for the men’s squad. He will look to build off of his 8k PR from two weeks ago.

All nine Boilermaker men that are running will make their first career Big Ten Championships appearance.

In 2011, the Purdue women finished 11th while the men finished ninth.

Full results and a recap will be posted on PurdueSports.com following the completion of Sunday’s race.
