WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Matthew McClintock was named the men’s Big Ten Runner of the Week on Tuesday, the conference office announced. It is the third time in his young career that McClintock has earned the Big Ten honor.
McClintock finished second at the Indiana Intercollegiates over the weekend. The sophomore ran a 25:04.88 and beat every runner from Big Ten rival Indiana. Though the time is well behind his career best, McClintock was following a race plan that he and distance coach Dave Hartman had devised in order to prepare him for the back half of the season. McClintock stuck back in the pack for the first 5,000 meters to help his teammates keep pace. Then, the Athens, Maine, native turned on the jets over the last 3,000 meters and improved from 20th place to second place by the end of the race.
McClintock has competed in two races this season. On Sept. 13 at the Big Ten Preview, McClintock finished first in a race that included Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan. In that 8k, he posted a time of 24:41.8 at the Boilermaker Cross Country Course.
The Boilermakers have a week off before returning to action on Oct. 4 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
