WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue cross country team picked up another weekly award from the Big Ten office. Matthew McClintock was named the Big Ten Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week after finishing fourth at the Indiana Intercollegiates last Friday.
McClintock completed the 8,000-meter race in 24:58.9, just 16 seconds behind the top finisher. The Boilermaker freshman’s finish was the top Big Ten time in the race which included Indiana. The race was also McClintock’s first career 8k. The Athens, Maine, native has finished first for the Boilermakers in both races this season. He ran a time of 18:54.8 at the Crusader Open to take the top overall spot on Aug. 31.
McClintock’s award is the first of its kind for the Purdue men’s program since Charles White earned the honor on Sept. 14, 2010.
Led by McClintock, the Boilermakers finished fourth at the Indiana Intercollegiates with a team score of 92. Purdue ran six freshmen and three sophomores in the race.
The Purdue men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action on Sept. 29 when they travel to the 40th Annual Sean Earl Invite in Chicago. That race is scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m. CT.
