WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The cross country teams open the 2017 season Friday at the Crusader Open. The Boilermakers, under head coach Lonnie Greene and new distance assistant John Oliver, will compete at Sunset Hills Farm with the women’s 5,000-meter race beginning at 6 p.m. ET and the men’s 6k to follow at 6:45.
Purdue will open the season against competitors from Fort Wayne, Notre Dame, Valparaiso and Western Michigan. The Boilermakers are expected to send 12 women and nine men to the meet.
Mary Abramson is among the top competitors on the women’s side entering the meet. The junior has a 5,000-meter cross country personal record of 17:18.3, which came a year ago at the Joe Piane Invitational. Alyssa Christoffer is also among the leaders. Alyssa Christoffer brings her experience into the meet. The senior was among Purdue’s top finishers at Big Tens a year ago.
The women have four rookies who will make the trip and compete for Purdue for the first time. Rachel Anderson, Kelsey Batt, Taylor Mortensen and Megan Slamkowski all debut in the Old Gold and Black on Friday.
On the men’s side, Jacob Hanawalt is among the men’s leaders competing. The junior was among Purdue’s top finishers at Big Tens and the Great Lakes Regionals a year ago. Matt Grider is also competing and was a top 50 finisher in the conference and the Great Lakes Region a year ago.
