URBANA, Ill. - The Big Ten Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday in Urbana, Ill., and the Purdue men finished ninth and the women 11th overall.
On the men's side, Stephen Schulz was the Boilermakers' top finisher after he posted a 15th place overall finish and a time of 24:15. Charles White wasn't too far behind Schulz as the senior finished in 27th place with a time of 24:30. Cale Allen took home 50th place points after he finished the 8K in 24:53. Simon Rogers crossed the finish line in 25:02, good for 53rd place points. Robert Stewart finished right behind Rogers with a time of 25:05 to round out the scoring for Purdue. The men finished with 199 points.
Wisconsin again repeated as champions after the Badgers were nearly perfect with a team score of 17. Indiana took second place with 60 points. Michigan finished third because of a tiebreaker with Minnesota, which finished fourth. Both teams had a team score of 104.
For the women, Stephanie Bonk was the top finisher for Purdue. The senior finished in 44th place with a 6K time of 21:21. Kelly McCurdy finished second for the Boilermakers and took home 53rd place points after crossing the finish line in 21:32. Dana Payonk finished with 64th place points after she posted a time of 21:54. Blair Doney finished 72nd with a time of 22:15. The women finished with a score of 306.
Michigan State repeated as Big Ten Champions as the Spartans edged their instate rival Michigan by six points. Michigan State finished with a score of 55 and Michigan had 61 points. Penn State finished third with a score of 71.
The Boilermakers have a couple weeks off before heading to regionals in November. Purdue will be in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 12 hosted by the University of Toledo. Start times will be announced the week of the race.
