Benner, Carpenter Lead XC to Team Wins

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The men and women swept the Indiana Intercollegiates on Friday at the Boilermaker Cross Country Course. Emma Benner won the women's 6,000-meter race by 59.6 seconds, while Jaret Carpenter was the medalist on the men's side, crossing the finish line of the 8,000-meter race in 25:15.2. Both repeated as individual champions.

The women finished with a team score of 23, while the men were nearly perfect, finishing with 16.

The men's team win is its first at the meet since 2011. The women's team win is the program's first since 2008. The women's victory is the 12th in program history at the meet. The men's victory is the 10th at the meet in program history. Benner and Carpenter and Purdue's first repeat champions in the history of the meet.

Benner opened her season at the meet and breezed to a victory. By the 2k mark, the sophomore was already 14.1 seasons ahead of the field. Her lead only grew from there before eventually crossing the line with the win. Grace Lachmund was Purdue's second finisher in the race and finished third overall. The senior was never worse than third place the entire race before finishing with a time of 22:34.4. Sophomore Jenna Halderman was third for Purdue and fourth overall. She ran the third fastest 6k of her career finishing with a time of 22:35.4. Senior Alyssa Christoffer and freshman Rachel Anderson rounded out the scoring for the Boilermakers. Christoffer was seventh overall with a time of 22:52.3, while Anderson was eighth in her first career race with a time of 23:21.4.

On the men's side, Carpenter, a sophomore, and standout freshman Curt Eckstein ran side-by-side for the first 7,000-meters. All seven of their splits to that distance were within 0.6 of a second of each other, including both crossing the 6k mark with matching times of 18:49.1. Carpenter pulled away at the end to win with a time of 25:15.2, while Eckstein finished runner-up in his first collegiate race with a time of 25:27.1. Jeremy Craven was among the lead group all race. The senior took third with a time of 25:35.1.

Junior Matt Grider was fifth overall and fourth among individuals competing in the Big State (Division 1) scoring. Grider finished with a time of 25:50.7. Levi Taylor rounded out the scoring with a seventh place finish - sixth in Big State - and a time of 25:54.2.
