Junior Kyle Orender led a strong finish by the Purdue men's cross country team on Saturday in the inaugural Great American Legends meet at the Varsity Cross Country Course.

Orender won the 8K race with a time of 25:06. Sophomore David Rae finished 5th at 25:39. Freshman Michial Jacob was 6th with 25:50, sophomore Jason Carlson finished 7th with a time of 25:54 and senior Robert Heise was 9th at 25:58.

The crowd erupted as Boilermakers worked away from the pack to take five of the top 10 spots.

Coach Mike Poehlein said the pack running was no accident.

"We've talked a lot about leadership and communication," said Poehlein, who is in his 30th year coaching Purdue cross country. "They held together, they talked and communicated and came on strong at the end."

About 100 runners from nine schools competed, as did a dozen unattached runners. Schools participating in the men's race besides Purdue were Illinois, Marquette, Illinois-Chicago, St. Joseph's, Bowling Green, IUPUI, Wright State University and Butler.

Complete results are available at www.purduesports.com.

The Legends race honors Bob Schul, 1964 Olympic gold medalist in the 5,000m. Schul now coaches men's and women's cross country at Wright State. The cross country team is again in action on Sept. 13 in the Alumni Superstition Open at the Varsity Cross Country Course at the corner of Cherry Lane and McCormick Road.
