WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2007 slate with solid performances at the Purdue Open at the varsity cross country course on Friday. In a non-scoring meet with Butler, sophomore Katie Morrical led the Purdue women, while fellow sophomore Matt De Silva paced the Boilermaker men.

Morrical headlined a parade of Purdue runners to finish at the top of the women's race as she nearly topped her previous collegiate 4K best with a time of 14:16.93. Classmate Kristin Phillips and rookie Kristina Krasich followed Morrical in second and third with times of 14:32.86 and 14:35.11, while senior Danielle Ginther crossed the line in 15:20.24 and freshman Erin Ragouzis was the fifth finisher at 15:23.35. Senior Kari Splitt led the Butler women with a time of 16:38.24.

On the men's side, De Silva ran a collegiate best time of 19:24.72 to finish second overall. First-year Jacob Laird was the second Boilermaker to the finish line with a time of 19:35.49, followed by classmate Alex Folk in 20:22.04 and sophomore Steve Swank in 20:26.38. Butler's Matt Lawder topped the field with a time of 19:21.63.

The Boilermakers continue their home stand next Friday, Sept. 7, with the Great American Legends race. The women's race will start at 5 p.m. with the men following at 5:45 p.m.
