WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermaker cross country teams opened their 2014 season at the Belmont Opener on Friday. Matthew McClintock led the men's team to a first place finish with a third-place individual finish.

In the men's results, McClintock ran a 15:11.13 in the 5,000-meter race. His finished helped the men finish with 42 points by their five counted finishers.

Tate Schienbein was Purdue's second finisher on the men's side. The junior ran a 15:19.25 to finish seventh overall. Dillon Hinen was close behind, as he crossed the finish line in 15:26.62 to take ninth and score nine points.

Freshman David Dalton had an impressive debut for the Boilermakers. He earned a top-11 finish in his first collegiate race, after finishing 11th with a time of 15:28.90. Caleb Kerr rounded out the scoring for Purdue. The junior finished 12th with a time of 15:28.94. Andrew Cartwright just missed scoring for the Boilermakers as he was the sixth Purdue individual to finish and took 13th overall with a time of 15:30.05.


 

 

The men's 42 points ran away with the team title at the meet. Middle Tennessee State was second with 69 points, including having the races top two finishers. Belmont took third with 71 points, Western Kentucky took fourth with 92 points and Kentucky was fifth with 114. Vanderbilt took sixth with 164 points.

The women's race originally did not have any times or places due to a timing error that occurred during the race. The race was reviewed and re-watched to determine times, finishes and places.

Kiara McIntosh was Purdue's top finisher. She took 22nd with a time of 18:30.06. Her finish took 17th place points. Laura Maibuecher and Michelle Potter ran with McIntosh, taking 23rd and 24th, respectively, with times of 18:33.07 and 18:36.14.

Freshman Gabrielle Broschard scored in her first career race. She took 34th, earning 29 points, with a time of 18:57.61. Amy Poynter rounded out the scoring with a time of 19:09.75, good for 42nd.

The Boilermakers are off until Sept. 19, when they host the Indiana Intercollegiates.
