2009: Opened the season with a Purdue-best 8K time of 25:28.60, leading the squad and placing second overall at the Great American Legends (9/4); improved his collegiate-best 8K for the second straight race, placing eighth overall at the Indiana Intercollegiates (9/18) with a time of 25:12.2; cracked the 25-minute mark for the first time at Purdue at the Greater Louisville Classic (10/3), placing 20th overall with a time of 24:34.81; finished with the team's top time and 35th placing at the Big Ten Championships (11/01) with a 26:28.8 in the 8K race; recorded at 10th place finish and qualified for the NCAA Championships at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships (11/14) with a career-best 10K time of 31:22.20.
2008: Was the Boilermakers' top finisher at the Big Ten Championships (11/2) and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships (11/15) in his only two races of the season; finished 47th overall at the conference race, crossing the line in 25:38.2 for 8K; notched the squad's top 10K time of the season, placing 37th at the regional meet in 32:19.20; posted the Boilermakers' top indoor and outdoor 5K and outdoor 10K times of the track and field seasons, marking a top 5K time of 14:27.04 and 10K time of 29:56.57.
Before Purdue: Attended the University of Otago in New Zealand for the past two years, where he had a very successful cross country and track and field career; two-time New Zealand Junior 10,000-meter run champion, posting the fastest time in the nation in 2007 and 2008; took second at the 2007 New Zealand Road Relays and notched the second fastest junior 5,000-meter run time in the country in 2007 at 14:39.00.
Personal: Caden Hamilton Standford Shields was born Aug. 7, 1988, in Dunedin, New Zealand; is the son of Tony and Wanda Shields; has four sisters: Veronique, Tamryn, Traire and Biance; enjoys sciences and playing the guitar; intends to major in biochemistry.
