T&F Spreads Holiday Cheer
Dec. 18, 2017

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The track & field student-athletes raised nearly $2,000, including donating almost $1,500 of their own money, to sponsor three families during the holiday season. The Boilermakers bought and wrapped gifts for the families and their children, who range from 4 to 12 years old.

"This project is very important to me and it's something I look forward to every year," head coach Lonnie Greene said. "I thought our kids did a phenomenal job. They wanted to see how much they could bless these families because they've seen the smiles on the families' faces in previous years that we've hosted this event. That's what it's all about. I thought our team represented Purdue, themselves and their families exceedingly well. I challenge them every year to be a blessing in the community. You never know what others are going through or when you'll be the one in need of a blessing. They took that challenge and ran with it and for that I'm very proud."

The project took nearly a month to plan and raise funds. The team then took the money and bought items from families' wish lists before spending a Saturday together to wrap the gifts. The presents were then delivered.

The team has been active in the community since Greene took over as head coach in 2012. The Boilermakers have participated in the Christmas donation and gift-wrapping event every year since he took over. Greene and the Boilermakers plan to continue hosting the event for as long as he is at Purdue.

The Boilermakers return to the track Jan. 13 to host the Gene Edmonds Invitational.
