WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's and women's track and field teams announced their team captains for the 2009 season on Friday, voting in seniors Stephen Bach and Ben Harpenau and junior Eric Sparks on the men's side, and seniors Kara Patterson and Lauren Scott and juniors Kristin Phillips and Stacey Wannemacher for the women.

Patterson, Scott and Harpenau were all voted team captains by their teammates for the second straight year, serving in the same capacity during their junior seasons. Patterson became the only female Olympian in Purdue track and field history in 2008, winning the U.S. Olympic Trials and setting a new meet record in the javelin. She also earned NCAA All-America honors, won the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship and Big Ten Championship and set Purdue, Big Ten and American collegiate records in the process. Harpenau qualified for his first career NCAA Championship in 2008, advancing to the outdoor meet in the hammer throw with an at-large bid, while Scott continued her career improvements, carving down her top time in the 400-meter dash.

Bach and Sparks are set to head the men's team for the first time in their respective careers as Bach scored in his first career Big Ten Championship in 2008, taking seventh indoors in the 600-meter run, while Sparks won his first career Big Ten Championship in the pole vault and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championship for the second straight season.

Phillips and Wannemacher make the captains' roster after solid sophomore campaigns as Phillips has solidified herself as one of the top distance runners on the Boilermaker roster, while Wannemacher has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in each of her first two seasons. Phillips is a member of the Purdue-record holding distance medley relay squad, which provisionally qualified for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championship, and owns most of the team's top distance marks over the last two years. Wannemacher holds both the indoor and outdoor shot put records at Purdue, setting both last season, and was the only woman in the Big Ten in 2008 to surpass the NCAA regional standards in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.

The Boilermakers are set to continue their rigorous training regiment over the rest of December and open their season Jan. 10, 2009 as they host the Purdue Invitational.
